Assignment Goals:
This project is a little different for a couple of reasons. First, is that this was meant to be presented by my group for the yearly school exhibition that's usually in-person, but due to the current situation with the pandemic, it will be added onto this website as another memorable project and presented online. For this particular project, most of the 9th grade teachers have come together to create an integrated project for us students concerning this huge problem called climate change. After giving us a little background and current information on the situation of the topic, we were tasked to choose among a list of possible solutions to prevent or sequester carbon emissions. We are then grouped with people who chose the same topic, and create a more detailed plan of how our solution can be implemented on Maui, if not the entire state of Hawaii. After this, we were to make a website on the problems of climate change, concerning our chosen solution topic, and show how we would be implementing our plan.
Why I want to show this work:
I wanted to show this project because it had a different take on the things that we usually did in the past school year. 1) It's one of the only group projects we were assigned throughout the entire year. 2) Almost all of our teachers have come together to form this integrated project, where it includes the involvement of all their respective subjects. 3) We are covering a real life problem, climate change, that affects everyone and everything and help solve some of the problems it's created within Hawaii. 4) We are involving actual experts and other people and/or organizations that concern on our topic. 5) This is probably the biggest, most impactful project we've done so far.
21st century skills:
There are many 21st Century Skills that were needed throughout this project for it to actually be a plausible solution to reducing carbon emissions. However I think that the highlighted skills used here were III. Thinking and Problem Solving Skills and VI. Global Awareness Skills, where I was becoming more aware of what is happening in the ever-depleting condition of this world we are living in and to be able to come up with a way to fix or at least lessen the damage of the problem.
Current Growth:
This project has shown me that climate change is actually real, and that is has and is affecting us right now, at this very moment, and will make our lives harder as more and more time passes by without change. Itś also helped me improve to critically think of ways how we can help the earth, to work on websites, and to work cooperatively, coordinatively, and comfortably with my peers through our shared interests of the topic: Reduce Food Wastes.
New Growth:
I believe that I would have been able to contribute more to the group if I had known more about reducing food wastes, or at least researched more about it as I didn´t and relied on my groupmates knowledge, as that was their initial chosen topic and not mine.
