Assignment Goals:
For U.S. History, we were asked to pick a decade of our choice to research the on-goings in the U.S. during that time for the "Decade Project". Our end goal was to learn and present our findings about our chosen decade's president, wars, people's movement, disasters, music, fashion, music/books, science/technologies, celebrities, and other personal interests about the U.S.
Why I want to show this work:
Usually I don't particularly like history, because there are so many things to remember and take note off, like multiple events, when and where they occured, between who, and why it happened. When it's presented like that, I don't find myself interested in the subject, but through this step-by-step project, where we had to research and find out people, happenings, discoveries on our own and could still be within the range of our interests (our chosen decade), I found myself learning and absorbing more information that I would have if it were the classical way of being taught american history. It was in this moment that I enjoyed adn was proud of learning about the different kind of society we had only a few decades ago.
21st century skills:
By the end of this project, I needed to have used my VIII. Civic Literacy & Engagement Skills by learning, analyzing and understanding my learnings (including about our government and our communities then), to successfully know what I was to say, teach, and explain our history to my peers throughout my presentation on the different aspects of America back in the 1980s to be able to compare to our now and what could have been and what we could do better now. Learning our the past mistakes made yesterday makes you want to do better for our tomorrow. Knowing our past, full of both good and bad choices, we can learn from them to make better choices in our society today.
New Growth:
Like I said previously, I don't usually intake information during history class as all there is information about a past that we don't use for our daily lives, therefore finding no importance in learning about such things. However, I was actually able to enjoy learning about our history, despite my previous sentiment on the topic, which was the most dificult about this project. But since I was able to overcome that, the only left for me left to regret on was my lack of ability to summarize the important areas of my research instead of going on and on that it would bore my audience, which actually has been a reccuring problem in the past. I will take this experience to better prepare and more efficiently present in the future.
